Listening Lately: Podcasts I Love

Listening Lately- Podcasts I Love

Ryan and I joke that about 75% of the time I tell him a story, bring up a big new idea, or share a random piece of information, I start my sentence with: “So, I was listening to this podcast …”

Okay, maybe that’s not a joke: It’s just a fact. I definitely love podcasts, and if I’m cooking, cleaning, or running you’re pretty much guaranteed to find me listening to one. Here the top five podcasts I’m loving lately.

Serial - Our Streamlined Life

Favorite: Serial

Serial was the first podcast I ever listened to, and it’s still my favorite and number one podcast addiction. (I started it last winter to motivate myself to run in the cold — I would only let myself listen to it on my frosty weekend long runs during half marathon training.) Season 1 investigated the 1999 disappearance and death of high school student Hae Min Lee, and the case against her 17-year-old ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, who was arrested for the crime and sentenced to life in prison. Adnan maintains he had nothing to do with Hae’s death.

Season 2 just began and I am hooked again. (The break between seasons led me to discover some of my other favorite mystery-related podcasts, like Missing Maura Murray and Criminal.) Season 2 is totally different from Season 1, but is equally gripping and definitely controversial. It’s the story of Bowe Bergdahl, the soldier who walked off his U.S. Army outpost in Afghanistan and was captured by the Taliban. Some say he’s a deserter who deserves life in prison; others say he suffered enough during his five-year captivity. Bergdahl has been quiet through it all, but in Serial, we finally hear his side of the story: Why he left, and what happened to him.

Happier with Gretchen Rubin - Our Streamlined Life

Life: Happier with Gretchen Rubin

I shared a few weeks ago how much I love Gretchen Rubin’s book The Happiness Project, and her podcast is a really fun extension of the book. She hosts it with her sister, TV writer Elizabeth Craft, and I love their sisterly dynamic. Gretchen and Elizabeth discuss everything from creativity and exercise to habits for happiness and the Four Tendencies Framework of personalities. It’s an easy-listening podcast that always leaves me thinking.

Being Boss - Our Streamlined Life

Work: Being Boss

Being Boss is new to my podcast roster, and it’s all about being a creative entrepreneur, from money and invoicing to personal branding and finding dreamy clients. Every time I finish listening to a Being Boss episode I’m inspired to start a new project, take a fresh look at my work, or invest in self care and growing my business. Episode 2 — What to Do When You’re Freaking Out About Money — is inspiring and reassuring gold for the freelancer, small business owner, or solopreneur.

One Part Podcast - Our Streamlined Life

Food: One Part Podcast

Jessica Murnane’s podcast is about food (plant-based eating, specifically), but it’s so much more than that. She’s had some seriously fantastic guests — Andie Mitchell, Dana Schultz, and Adina Grigore have been a few of my favorites — and her real talk about blogging, branding, and how food affects our bodies is seriously uplifting and thought-provoking. And as a gluten-free vegetarian, her recipes and nutrition advice are on point for my needs.

Extra Pack of Peanuts Travel Podcast - Our Streamlined Life

Travel: Extra Pack of Peanuts Travel Podcast

Last summer I totally binged on just about every back episode of the “EPOP” travel podcast, and I can definitely see why it’s the #1 travel podcast on iTunes. Travis Sherry shares a little about his travels, a lot about travel hacking, and all about traveling the world on your terms — whether you’re a full- or part-time traveler. He’s interviewed a lot of interesting travelers and location independent entrepreneurs, but my favorite episodes are when he’s joined by his wife Heather and they discuss everything from relationships on the road to their favorite meals around the world.

  2. Thanks to you for introducing us to the pleasures of podcasts. We are now obsessed with Serial (saving the final episode of Season 1!) and will check out your other recommendations too. Really nice to be able to share and listen together on long journeys. We are also enjoying ‘On the Media’.

    1. Yay, I’m so glad you like them! Serial is now releasing every other week and it’s making me crazy … Season 2 is totally different from Season 1 but just as compelling. Podcasts are definitely a great travel companion 😀
